The wels is a voracious carnivore after its early life stages, eating fish, amphibians, and small aquatic animals. Growth is rapid during the summer season, and
the fish attain 100 g by the end of the first year, and 1 kg by the end of the second year. Typical of predatory fish, the wels can live for many years, reaching
a length of 2 m and weighing over 30 kg.
